I have done it and there is no way back. I bought myself a present. I have got a MacBook!Cool

I was looking for a new laptop, as my oldie one - still from Uni days - literally died on me after struggling with the latest web and bandwidth demands.
So I started looking for my new purchase. Something told me it was high time I looked into what Apple had to offer. I had never used Macs before, but I was quite intrigued by the Mac users' loyalty to their machine. So I decided to start asking around. I even remember that when I started working at the University of Salford, someone at the Faculty of Arts, Media & Social Sciences proudly announced: “our students do love their Macs.” I was never able to forget that sentence. It was so convincing the way he said it! But just to make sure, I kept asking. I even asked it in my Facebook account. The respondents were pretty divided. More than a half were PC users; the rest were MAC supporters. Do you know what I mean?

The PC users described what they perceived to be a good machine; the Mac users, on the other hand, reported passionately about what a Mac can do for you.
There is something about Macs. Its users kind of develop an identity as Mac users and support it all the way. They stick to their machine and truly believe in it. And that is the difference, I guess.
To understand it better, I decided I needed to experience it myself.  I joined the Mac community as I have just purchased my own Mac this weekend. I announced it in my skype mood and you would be amazed at the number of messages I received today. I can feel the warmth of the Mac community already.

I also know that many Emergers are Mac users! I sure would welcome comments and advise on how to handle my latest acquisition.
What can I say. I do LOVE my Mac and I am a proud to be a Mac user now. Wink

  1. Good for you! I came over to the light side a year ago and have never regretted it!

(Admittedly I do have to run a pc as well to actually use most of the software I need. One of these days I'll get around to duel booting my mac but I'm scared to tarnish it with 'dirty windows' ;o)

  2. Hi Nocola.

I have finally managed to see the light too! you know what they say: better later than never. I am still learning how to use it efficiently, but I am eally happy I convert to MAC! Cool

I can only ask myself: why ONLY now????!

  3. check out my site - www.mactips.co.uk It is designed to help new mac users to get going. More than happy to take requests for areas you are stuck with. I am an Apple Trainer and so know a fair bit about them.

  4.  Will do so. Cool site!

I will share it with others as well.

And I am starting already with my first query, more of a whining actually: why is the new Macbook graphic card (GMA X3100) not compatible with Second Life? I almost fainted when I learned that!

I am not sure who I should be sending my “protest” toEmbarassed: MAC or SL?

I was really upset to know I can’t run SL properly on my new Mac.

Fortunately a friend of mine found a solution here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/MacBook_Pro_2007_Graphics_Freeze_Workaround

  5. Yes, there is a problem  - mostly to do with the video cards.

Go to this site and about the 4th comment down is some tips from a guy who works at Linden Lab. he has some settings which may help your second life experience.

  6. Those SL: tips were really helpful. A lot of people in the Emerge community who have complained about SL on their PCs or Macs might benefit from knowing how to tweak down the demands of the virtual world.

  7. Indeed. And this is what a Community is all about: helping each other.

I will try to follow Simon's suggestions this evening.

Thank you so much for this Simon.  Wink

  8. I just can't stand it when people get all drooly about their Macs. Its a machine, for crying out loud! With a slightly different UI, but the same corporate structure behind it - if not worse. Choosing between Apple and Microsoft is like choosing between Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Well, MS is marginally worse - with its DRM, but just about.

Personally, I find Macs nice for graphics but generally very unfriendly. I'm using the same laptop I got 6 years ago. It runs Ubuntu and its a very happy bunny, and so am I.

  9. Well, what can I say.

We cannot please everyone nad THANKS GOD there is diversity in this world! :-)

But you have to agree...there is something about MACs. Their users do stick to their Macs in a way PC users don't!

  10. Also do not forget that I am running 3 operating systems on my Mac! - An Apple laptop is not just about the operating system. (Although having a virus free OS is a great bonus)!
