Cathy Tombs :: Blog :: Learning Innovation study

October 09, 2008

I am part of the Learning Innovation team at Coventry University. At present I am undertaking a study into how education in immersive virtual worlds affects end users and their practice. The research involves meeting with staff and students who have experience with learning in virtual worlds. I am currently seeking about 10 students to interview and about 3 staff members. If anyone is interested in participating or, more urgently, knows of any students who may be interested, please drop me an e-mail at c.tombs@coventry.ac.uk.

See the information sheet for more details below:

What is the purpose of this study?

The aim of this study is to explore the impact of learning in immersive worlds on end users and their practice. We wish to interview staff and students and users about their experiences with learning in virtual worlds such as Second Life. The purpose is to hear the participants’ accounts of their experiences told in their own words. The data collected will then be condensed into several publications detailing how responses to new technologies are affecting the end users and their practice.

What do I have to do?

An interview will be arranged between you and the interviewer for a time, date and place convenient to you. At the interview, you will be asked a series of questions related to your experiences in learning in immersive worlds. You should tell of your experiences in your own words, almost as if telling a story. The interview should take approximately 30 minutes.

If for some reason you cannot attend the interview but still wish to take part, a telephone interview can be arranged.

What if I change my mind?

Your participation in this study is purely voluntary and should you wish to withdraw at any point, you are free to do so without having to give a reason. Likewise, if there are any questions during the interview process that you do not feel comfortable answering, please say so and we will move on to the next question.

What will happen to the information I give?

The interview will be digitally recorded so that the interviewer can focus all their attention on listening to you rather than taking notes. The interview will then be transcribed; however any personal details that may affect your anonymity will be kept confidential.

What will happen to the results of the study?

It is planned that this research will be published. However we are keen to ensure total anonymity on your behalf.
