dave cormier :: Blog :: A Project I'm working on - a possible model for working here?

April 29, 2007

What I'm doing

I've got a project that is just going to second viewing in Canada. Smallish grant, in the 20K (UK) range. What i'm trying to do is flush out an existing moodle course that my partner designed for the intro to academic writing class at UPEI. Design some nice bits around it, make it a little more interactive and then make an intro version of it for public release. The idea is to have a nice, tight, self suficient intro version for use by ESL students, K-12 students and the general public who might be interested in either learning a little bit about the structures there or, even better, use it to help students get a jump start on their uni course.

What I need

Anyone doing something like this?

Any models out there that I should know about?

Anyone have an idea of why this is a BAD idea?

Would also love it if someone else were interested and we could share the planning or even use this project (assuming it works) as a proof case for something else.

  1. Hi Dave,

I am curious about this project. It's definitely interesting.

I can't remember about having seen something similar...I will ask around.

Let me know if I could collaborate/cooperate (the terms of the day - we ought to use them! Smile ) with you in any way.

  2. Thanks Cristina.

We'll be writing out some kind of model in the next couple of weeks for the final grant application at the end of June. I (or my partner) will post something here for potential critique or creative theft for someone else's project (assuming it will have that kind of value, which is really just a hope at this point).

  3. Dave

We're using academic writing here as the pilot 'skill' for an HEA/JISC study and (like Cristina above) think a small module such as yours (and your partner's !!) would have real value. We'd be happy to help in some way if you're pushed.

  4. Hey guys

I created an academic writing community. I'll post all of my work on this project to that, and it would be cool if you guys do the same with your own work on the subject. We'll try this community stuff out and see if it works :) (for community, see my profile)

  6. We are developing materials in Moodle to support what we have called 'extended induction' where we start communicating with students online as soon as they have accepted to come on the course. our first attempt at this will be up and running by Sept. We have issues with academic writing and a very diverse student communty.
