George Roberts :: Blog :: What is emerging?

April 10, 2008

I just had to pass this on (via Stephen Downes). A sign of the times?

Ray Sims, in his "personal learning journal", ... asks, "in the context of enterprise 2.0, what items potentially demonstrate emergent behavior?" He then helpfully (?) provides a top-of-the-head list of 10 items. So, my question is whether this is helpful? Is everything 2.0 also all in beta? Everything contingent; nothing solid. Has the concept of emergence itself become unproductive?

  1.  Everything is emergent all of the time, forever beta , but we stop ourselves from going mad by seeing patterns and taking snapshots so we can make decisions and get on with our lives.   The great thing is that the patterns and snapshots are emergent too, as we use them and revsie them in a constantly changing environment.

Maybe we should think about Brownian motion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motion

When you look at your sleeping baby's finger, do you see a fat, still, little human digit or a site of frenzied activity?
