George Roberts :: Blog :: Single sign-on is coming

June 03, 2007

Hi all

I am hearing some concern about the number of sites being used for Emerge, and yes there are several and the number is growing. As a VLE is a collection of tools, bundled (discussion, content delivery, calendar, editing) so our community development environment is a collection of tools: social networking, knowledge construction and information dissemination. We are working on a single sign-on so that these tools appear more closely integrated. The Moodle, Elgg and MediaWiki will all be accessible directly from your Emerge Elgg account, but that will be in about 2 weeks time.

The intermediate solution is that we have uploaded your Emerge Elgg credentials (username and password) into the Moodle site. This does mean that while you will have to log on, you will log on with the same user name and password.

Ideas, please, on how to handle multi-inter-institutional site authentication, seamlessly.

  1. Hurrah!!  I think this will make things easier - it is certainly one of the biggest hurdles staff and students encounter moving around the different environments at our institution, especially if they are part-time and / or based off-campus.  It made a huge difference when the log-ins were synchronised.

  2. I would agree that this is causing grief (along with the variety of software & interfaces) - and forms one of the major hurdles for students, especially IT novices.

Will Shibbolith eventually solve these issues or are there other solutions which will overcome these problems?
