Janet Finlay :: Blog :: Closing the village hall....

January 30, 2009

I was quite depressed to hear George say yesterday that the Elgg site would be replaced by an archive site at the end of the programme. Am I the only one who would like to see this community given the chance to continue on its own? Maybe it will die a natural death but it seems slightly unethical to create a community then remove its life support system just because the funding ends.... Rather like taking the heart of the village by boarding up the villiage hall....

Of course we all have other communities - we always have had - but they are not this one - and I for one have appreciated being part of this. I don't want the opportunity to engage with it cut off on April 1st!

Can community action here help us? Or am I a single voice in the wilderness...?

  1. I suspect the issue is about paying for the hosting. If someone can host the software and maintain it (esp provide security updates) then I suspect George could be persuaded to hand it over??

  2. Yes - it was clear after discussion today that the the Elgg community can continue (sans JISC branding) if the community takes it forward. We are making plans to do that now - the funding required is relatively triviai and the will seems to be there to see if this has legs of its own... all encouraging.

  3. Hi. Hosting and software maintenance is not really the issue. The hosting for the community can be provided as long as the community adopt and implement appropriate membership, governance and moderation policies and practices.
