Janet Finlay :: Blog :: Future of Emerge - the clock is ticking....

March 24, 2009

At the last two F2F meetings there has been a lot of talk about continuing at least the online Emerge community and seeing whether it can "re-emerge" as something self sustaining. I have contacted privately those people (outside the support team) who expressed interest in helping to keep this going. But we are rapidly approaching the time we have to make the final decision: move it somewhere else or pull the plug.

We have the capacity to host the Elgg site (or rather a new version of it) for at least a couple of years. We do not (at present) have funding for F2F events but we can look at trying to get some. But what we need critically at this point is a definite commitment from members of the community who want to be involved - I don't want to go ahead with this and find there are just one or two of us shouldering the responsibility! To succeed this has to come from the community - we can't expect the Emerge team to do this after the end of the programme - though some are willing to stay involved as individuals in the running of it.

i know everyone is busy with final reports etc. but please take a moment to consider if this is something you would value in future. And if so - and you are willing to help out, whether with redesign, moderation, organising online events, seeking funding or any other activity, shout now (by sending me a message saying what you are able to do) or forever hold your peace! The end of the week may be too late

Cheers

Janet

  1. Janet

I'm out of the country from 2nd to 17th April but after that time I'm very keen to participate in keeping the spirit of Emerge going. I could tend the main blog entries and would like to try a crowdtasking area for HE & FE practioners where small tasks can be advertised or peers soughts etc (one of the araes of interest identified in our Project).

  2. I'm still buried in trying to find enough funding to stay employed but if that works out, I would really like to get back into helping Emerge retain its integrity as a community.

  3. I would be eager to see this community live on, and am willing to take on specific tasks. Can't take on any vertical responsibilites.
