Joe Rosa :: Blog :: Emerge Elluminate platform

April 21, 2008

The new Emerge Elluminate platform is online (link in the frontpage right-toolbar).

This week's conference wil be extensively using Elluminate so, some pre-familiarization with the platform is advised. We've created a 'Sandbox Meeting Space' that you can access using your Emerge-ELGG UserID/password.

Basic overview.

  • Everything runs in a 'Java' environment. If you go to (http://elluminate.jiscemerge.org.uk/support.help) it will test if you have Java installed, and if not it will give a download.

  • Then, if you access the platform (http://elluminate.jiscemerge.org.uk) using your ELGG UserID/password, you'll be able to see the meetings available for the day. And if you press the link 'This Week' underneath the calendar, the list of the week events will be visible.

  • Clicking in the 'Sandbox Meeting Space' a file 'meeting.jnlp' will be downloaded into your computer, and then two common default scenarios:

    • If you are using Internet Explorer, it downloads in a 'temp' folder and automatically starts the session
    • If you are using Firefox, it downloads the file in your desktop, and you need to double-click to start the session. (gets a bit crumbly when you have several sessions, but is one file per session)

Regarding the 'Sandbox Meeting Space'

Everyone is given 'Moderator' privileges, so you can experiment everything. It can have 6 microphones active at the same time, so you can use for small online meetings using breakrooms, but the feature for recording a session is disable.

Elluminate gives free live training everyday, and there are 'Quick reference guides and recorded sessions that you can access at http://elluminate.com/support/training/.

The Elluminate will be available for the Emerge community afterwards, so any investment towards familiarization with the platform will be rewarding. The Open University has adopted Elluminate for online tutoring, so no doubt that skills in the platform is a 'must' for who works in Education (I think!!).

Hope that we all enjoy this week's online conference...

  1. Not getting a connection Joe - is that likely to be a fault with our system, something I am doing / not doing or something else?  Getting a timed out message?  I am going to track down our tech support and ask him but he can be a bit elusive.

  2. Good Luck Rebecca. It is likely to be the Java settings on your machine.

  3. Thanks George - he has been here and no joy.  He says it is a problem with Elluminate not our system or machine - I have a strange sense of deja vu... we have reloaded Java and tried it via firefox - which worked last time but not this time.

  4. Hi Joe

Can we set up a meeting? We are doing a session tomorrow (the Planet slot) and would like to use Eluminate. We have slides etc to load up - can we do that?

  5. Just realised it is there - please can someone make myself, Jim Hensman and Steve Warburton moderators for this session. Yish is not going to be able to make it.

  6. Joe - tried to ring you but no joy. Had another technician down and he correctly diagnosed the problem as firewall settings. Just waiting now for the permission to change them for myself and Kathrin and then - I hope!!! - we will be in Elluminate tomorrow - or the day after...

  7. Hello JAnet - I'll do, but please email Josie as well.

Hello Rebecca, please give me a call, and go to the support page http://elluminate.jiscemerge.org.uk/support.help and reinstall form there. And tell me which Machine, Operational System, and memory available in the machine.

  8. We are sorted - it was a firewall problem at our end. So, I have access (but no headset and mike) but a full day of meetings so won't get in live today but Kathrin has been; tomorrow I **hope** to have access from home (it is the day my new computer and wireless hub get installed - no big deal for most folks on here, I know, but a big deal for me) and Friday I have some time around teaching and will bring my mike headset in from home sooooo might see and hear some of it.
