You may or may not have heard yesterday that Linden Lab, in accordance with the sales tax regulations of European Union countries in which SL residents live, must now collect and remit Value Added Tax, or VAT, from residents.
The full Linden Lab statement is at http://secondlife.com/corporate/vat.php but in short they intend to charge VAT on the following:
- Premium account registration
- Purchases from the Land Store
- Land use fees (tier)
- Private Region fees
- Land auctions
Obviously there may be other VAT issues emerging and we are currently investigating what the longer term implications may be in consultation with the JISC IPR consultants. For now it is enough to mention it in the Risk Analysis in a bid, but no one will be penalised if they do not as I am sure that most of you who are preparing bids in this area have already finished writing them.
Watch this space for further information about the issue.
