Mary Smith :: Blog :: Hello and welcome!

November 24, 2008

Welcome to the blog for the new East London Lives 2012 digital archive project, funded by JISC as part of its 'Enriching Digital Resources' programme and based at the University of East London, UK. The project began in October 2008 and will go live in September 2009.

The project will reflect on and record any changes in East London happening towards the Olympic Games being hosted here in 2012. In this first year we shall be concentrating on themes of social regeneration and health and wellbeing, as these were the subjects of legacy promises made in order to host the Games. We will have oral histories, multimedia clips, research documents, transcripts of interviews, photographs and so on.

My name is Mary and I am the ELL2012 Project Manager. Over the next year I shall use this blog to communicate informally about the process of creating a digital archive, and about doing so on in East London, our local area. We have a diverse team of people working on this project, all of whom have different hopes – and fears! - and I shall try and reflect here on our working decisions and choices about content and design/interfaces. Personally, what I am most looking forward to is the opportunity to make research carried out at UEL in support of the archive entirely open access. In this way we hope to support people studying the impacts of mega events and provide a resource for the local community. In the next few weeks I shall be writing more about how we want to make our archive accessible to everybody.

Please feel free to respond to any posts made – it would be good to hear what people want to see in the archive or to receive advice. We also have a holding website until our project goes live in September 2009 - it is www.uel.ac.uk/ell2012 - please check it out!

  2. Yes, and a hello from me. Welcome to the Emerge site/U&I community. Looks like a very interesting project. East London has gone through so many changes, but I suspect still has a human heart.
