The Alt-C evening meal (for those who are attending the conference & have signed up for it) is served in the adjacent Refectory building, and as usual will provide a handy initial meeting point for some of you. Otherwise, head over to the Mine Bar. We may be moving on somewhere else but we'll stay at the Mine Bar until at least 20.30.

We've been lucky enough to have had some great special guests at previous meetups - including James Farmer, Stephen Downes, Barbara Dieu, Christopher D. Sessums and Barbara Ganley. This year's meeting promises to be as jam packed with world-class edubloggers as ever, including Scott Wilson and Graham Attwell. George Siemens will also be in town - he's speaking at ALT-C early Wednesday - and I'm looking forward to meeting up with him for the first time in 3D.

As every - this is an informal, fun get together. You don't have to dress up and you don't have to be an old school edublogger to come along. Everyone who has an interest in edublogging is welcome. To co-inside with F-ALT, the first ever grass roots fringe event at ALT, which will be tackling a range of cutting edge topics in a fast, dynamic debate framework, we'll be holding the microblogging session on the night. Su White will be facilitating speakers Helen Whitehead, James Clay, Jay Cousins, Andy Powell & maybe me in a kung-fu style roundtable. This year we're trying to be even more reckless ambitious and inviting old and new friends from all over the world to pitch in to this years slam topic/competition, which is, in keeping with ALT-C's over-arching theme, The Digital Divide.

What we hope to get out of the session is a wide ranging exploration of dimensions of the digital divide: To produce and collect short real-world and digital pieces on what the digital divide means to people, how it can be interpreted, and what it's impacts are. In other words, what does the digital divide mean to you?

Obviously whole we're hoping for a reasonably diverse bunch of participants on the day, there are going to be limits on the heterogeneity of a group of people at an ed tech conference in Leeds on any particular afternoon. So we'd really like to encourage other people to join in. We are looking for participants from all over the world to contribute to building a resource which is interesting, innovative, and engaging topics. We'd like to build a cross cultural snapshot mosaic of what the digital divide can mean and how it's experienced.

The workshop will be running next Wednesday, 10 September 2008 at the University of Leeds, and participants will be creating and performing 'slams' around the digital divide theme - performance pieces which tackle issues in multiple ways. Checkout last years slams for some ideas of this experimental format, and this years wiki for more of an explanation.

We'll be capturing and uploading content until midnight GMT on the 10th of September, and then giving everyone a chance to vote for their favorite slam, from those created and performed on the day and those contributed by educators across the globe.

We're producing some sample slams for you to explore, and you can find information about how to upload your own contribution here.

So, interested in experimental, collaborative and distributed research processes?

One of my favorite sessions at the last Emerge online conference, Exploring User 2.0 was the hands-on closing session on Digital Storytelling. John Sandars invited us to upload a single image "that represents your feelings about engaging with web 2.0 technologies" prior to the session, and we talked through 12 submitted pictures.

The session was very lively, thought provoking and funny. People who had submitted pictures and were present talked through what they were trying to get at. Some people adopted orphaned slides and tried to imagine what their creators had been trying to get at, or made up their own versions. There was a fair amount of collective meaning making, and many salutary reminders that meaning is a slippery, uncontrollable beast.

If you'd like to join in, you can go do so now with our special extended SlideShare version. All the slides are up, accompanied by snippets from the sessions text chat. Go along, and add your own thoughts or impressions to one (or more!) of the pictures.

If one of the pictures is yours, I'll be asking you to send me further details for posting next week (once everyone has had a chance to peruse the images and leave comments). I'll be asking for a sentence of what the picture is of (& how it was made, if that's relevant) and info about what you were trying to represent.

To me, the session really represented the strengths of our serious fun ethos - using an innovative approach to reflective practice to scratch well past the surface of users experiences. Enjoy!

If you haven't previously used Twitter, support is on it's way from Anne Jeffery and Andy Ramsden who will be leading on the conferences microblogging related activities. If you do already have an account - why not friend Emerge over there?

I ran a session on day two of our last conference (Digital Communities, Digital Identities) on Microblogging, Lifestreaming and Presence (slides are available here, audio is available from the Moodle course site), so I'm delighted to see this being taken forward. You can also get some information on microblogging from my report on Young People and Social Networking Services (plenty in there of use to older people too) - microblogging is covered within What are Social Networking Services? although only the summary version is posted to site. To get hold of the full version with complete references, you can download the full chapter version (pdf) or download the entire document (pdf). Check out the ideas section too, for links and examples of how people are using microblogging for formal and informal learning.

You can also use your Twitter posts onsite. Once you have an account its easy - just make sure you're logged in here, and click through account settings. Scroll down the page and insert your Twitter username and password, and then hit the save button at the bottom of the page. Your latest update will now automagically appear in your sidebar!

The conference programme has been posted to it's very own Moodle course, so you can head over and take a look at what's promising to be another great online conference. This one is being led by Emerge support team members Isobel Falconer and Chris Fowler, and the social event is again being led by Steven Warburton.

Those of you who attended our last event will know how useful (and how much fun :) ) these can be. All of our events play a key role in bringing the community together to share and discuss both their projects' work and the wider interests, concerns and knowledge of each of our individual members. All of the projects need to attend events, or send at least a couple of delegates who can report back to their colleagues. If you haven't signed up yet then do head over to the registration page.

It's a grey and dreary day here, so it's great to be able to swing by the Emerge site and see how things are moving forward. Things are noticeably more lively than usual over here, and it's great to see so many members sharing resources, information, news and asking important questions. If your project isn't bringing it's off site blog goodness to the party, remember it's very easy to do so - and if you have problems you can always shout out to Joe Rosa or me for a hand.

I'm really excited about this months online conference and looking forward to seeing all of the projects at this weeks warm up session Thursday June 5, 12.30 - 14.00. Please do make sure that your project is represented and let us know if you aren't able to send any one along. Have all of your team signed up for the online conference yet? If you still have anyone who hasn't, make sure you send them over to the signup page.

I want to give a big congratulations to the new benefits realisations projects that have just been announced too - I'm very excited to see the outputs from ARGOSI, Flourish (no onsite community page as of yet, so I'm linking to Sarah Chesney's page for now), PREVIEW (link goes to Maggi Savin-Baden's page for now), Sounds Good and EXTEND (link to Frances Bell). I'm looking forward to seeing these projects all making their presence felt on site :)

While I'm in round up mood, also a reminder that its easy and important to make sure your personal profile page and project home pages are good looking and informative. Using widgets, running RSS feeds, putting up project photos - or even video and audio - is a snap. If you can still hear the wind whistling through your pages check out the Using Community Space Worksheet in the tutorials file store - scroll down, it's the last one in there at the moment. We'll also be producing some new handy how-to guides soon.

The online version breaks the sections up for your viewing pleasure - so you can just dip in to the sections which are of interest or use to you. The report was written from a UK schools and Further Education perspective, although much of the information will be useful to people working outside of these two contexts.

It isn't a completely introductory level document, but should be useful and informative for people who have a responsibility care towards children and young people - including governors, principals and senior management teams, Safeguarding boards and local authorities - people who are making decisions concerning educational provision and resourcing. It will also be very handy for anyone working within the sector and wanting to use internet based services with young people.

What's in the pack?

What are Social Networking Services? looks at where we are in terms of definitions, and splits services up into six main categories: Profile-based services (eg Bebo, Facebook, MySpace); Content-focused services (eg Flickr, YouTube); White-label networks (although I could have written a book about these); Multi-User Virtual Environments (although some of these aren't necessarily social networks - particularly those designed for younger children); Mobile services; and Microblogging/Presence update services (Social Search engines & Lifestream aps also get a mention as adjunct services). The version that's on the site is the short one. you can download the 9 page PDF on site or from here:

Download social-networking-overview.pdf

Evaluating Social Networking Services comes in two parts: an evaluation chart which has an online version and an easier-for-me-to-read downloadable version:

Download Sns.pdf
That's designed to be printed off big (well, A3). The services which were kind enough to take part are used as examples to help people make their own evaluations of services. Big thanks to everyone at Bebo, Facebook, Yahoo!, MySpace, Ning, Taking It Global and Google who pitched in and gave permissions. There is also a checklist guide that accompanies the chart, designed to walk you through what to look out for when evaluating services for use with young people. This covers a lot of things, including profile privacy, moderation, customisation, security and access issues, data management tools, and interoperability.
Benefits & Opportunities is a section looking at the potential positives for young people and organisations of using social networking services.

Barriers & Risks looks some of the issues preventing educators from exploring social networking services and some of the e-safety issues involved.

The Ideas and Examples returns to the different kinds of social networking services outlined in the first section and looks at what educators in the UK and around the world are doing. I'd like to continue to develop and expand this section so all suggestions are welcome - and of course you can always enter your fantastic project for this years International Edublog Awards :)

So that's it! Except to again thank the fantastic advisory board who worked on the project, keeping an eye on how the research was developing and what the final report looked like.

The Emerge support team are hard at work this month making sure that there are plenty of activities, events and opportunities for our geographically disparate community to have fun and be productive together. We're looking forward to seeing how the constituency will pitch in to our upcoming conference - Exploring User 2.0, and those who aren't able to be there themselves will make sure their teams are well represented. Sign up is open now - our last online event was a huge success and with you along - how can our next one be any less spectacular?

In addition, we'll be running a lunch time seminar on Thursday June 5, 12.30 - 14.00. Chaired by the ever lovely Graham Attwell and co-piloted by the just as lovely Isobel Falconer the drop in session will be held in Emerge's Elluminate platform (log in nearer the time using your Emerge username and password for room access). No - our lunches don't usually stretch that long either - but there are two great reasons why you should block out your diary:

Firstly, from 12.30 - 13.15 Graham and Isobel will be leading a discussion session which tackles issues around our June conference and the event to be held in the autumn. We will be focusing on user experience and benefits realisation, so if you've any interest in either of these, then please come along. We'll also be asking about evaluative practices and swapping notes and ideas. If you've never used the platform before, this is an ideal opportunity to try it out - tech support will be on hand and we'll aim to get everyone up an running super fast.

Secondly, the 13.15 - 14.00 slot will be for projects taking an active role in the June event. If your team didn't present last time round - then you should be planning on taking up a short slot. Participating is a great way of sharing your stories and hard earned wisdom with the community and also in evidencing some of the team days all of our funded projects have agreed to. This session will be to become more confident with the platform, discuss opportunities for formats, and to plan slots.

So, those diary dates in full:

June 5: 12.30 - 14.00, conference warm-up & discussion

June 23-25 Exploring User 2.0, Emerge online conference

(& not forgetting the Emerge Evolve project launch, this Friday, May 30 17.00 GMT)
