As some of you might know, we have been awarded a small grant from emerge to look at the link between user interface issues, social software and learning experience.
In that study we are going to use eye tracking technologies to capture the way learners interact with social software.
Examples of eye-tracking visualizations of user's eye fixations:

While traditional usability techniques are often quite powerful in providing information on clicking and scrolling patterns, eye tracking offers the ability to analyze user interaction between the clicks. This provides valuable insight into which features are the most eye-catching, which features cause confusion and which ones are ignored altogether.
I talked about eye tracking at my short presentation yesterday at York and George was asking whether it might be possible for EMERGE projects to make use of our facilities (Lab) and technologies (eye tracking) to evaluate their tools.
The answer is ofcourse yes. We do plan to use some examples from EMERGE in our small study. But we are also interested in running seperate deeper evaluations of your projects if you think our tools and methods could be of use to you. There might be a fee for this, i am happy to discuss the details with anyone interested. I also understand from George that there might be possibilities (i hope i understood this correctly) to draw from EMERGE funds for such studies.
