Emerge Island – a Second-Life community build at ALT-C and beyond

We have a newly purchased island in Second Life for the community to use and we are planning to have an interactive build during the ALT-C conference next week. What exactly does this mean: simply, we want to invite members of the community and delegates at ALT-C to join the team building on the island. This might be ideas for types of activities (fun  or educational) or architectural structures. We have a list of possible builds which we will attempt to create from now, up to, and then during the conference – obviously what we can achieve will depend on community input and how complex the ideas are to design and build. The suggestions so far include:

a.   A maze as a poster presentation area
b.   Art gallery
c.   Horses as a novel way to travel across the island
d.   A balloon ride
e.   Base jumping station
f.    A serene space – Japanese garden?
g.   A dance area with appropriate scripts/animations
h.   An area for media and streaming media presentations

Comments and additions welcome and the more radical or experimental the better!
I will create a SLurl for the island shortly and post details on the Emerge site

What about having a virtual visitor's book.  Have a digital camera on the stand... take portraits or whatever of people... upload them as textures, layer them onto simple cubes, maybe add a notecard to each cube?  Could also add a script to each cube to take people to a Web page (ELGG, Facebook, home page, whatever) when they click on the cube?

    Could stack the cubes into a visitor's wall of some kind?

    I'd be very happy to help with building... and have reasonably healthy in-world bank balance to help with buying stuff if necessary.  I'd particularly like to try my hand at building quiet/serene space / wooded area.

  2. I think the idea of building during ALT-C is a good one - I hope to have a SL laptop on the Eduserv stand and would be happy to build from there.
